I'm watching this show on Animal Planet called "Animal Armageddon." One of the animals the show follows is one of the first mammals and our ancestor (if you believe in evolution, which I do). I forget the name, but it does start with a Z. It sounds like "Zorastradon" or something like that. (Sorry, I'm bad with names.) It looks like a weasel.
Moving on!
The time is the Triassic period. There is a momma weasel taking care of her baby weasels. Pangea is breaking up into separate continents and the land is full of strife, and devoid of plentiful food. So this weasel evolved to have mammary glands, which came from sweat glands. The mother was able to feed her young with her own body rather than waste her valuable energy foraging for food for multiple beings. Clever bodily function!
There's a featured post on Momaroo about breastfeeding right now, and I thought that it was funny that I came across this TV show. It's like breastfeeding is superior because it was what saved the early mammals from extinction, which led to the evolution and eventual appearance of humans.
