  • Uh-oh, I don't know what to do with my English teacher!

We just got back our first assignment and it doesn't sound like anyone got higher than a C. We were supposed to write a double-spaced sentence about why we were attending school this semester. We also had to a have a cover page (for a sentence assignment?!). I wrote down, "I am attending Kankakee Community College to work towards an Associate's in Biology." Pretty straightforward, I thought. I still got a C.

I lost one point for mechanics because I forgot to double-space. I reprinted the assignment on the back of the same paper (save trees, right?). She read the sentence on the back. Phooey. After class, I asked her what I could have done to get full points for content. She said I needed to add what I wanted to do with my degree. I didn't think the assignment asked for that. She apologized, but I think a lot of people left that class angry. 3 people already dropped it, including the girl I sat next to in my History class.

She is a bit spacey, I agree. What worries me is if she's going to be a tough grader. We had to correct her on the content of her own course calendar! She wants a thesis statement on Wednesday even though it's clearly marked September 9th. I don't know what to do. She just passed out the first assignment and it's to write a 4-page narrative on a controversial event in our life. I know I can easily do this, but her grading seems so stringent.

So, should I stay the course? Or get another English teacher--it's only the second week of term. Ahh, I just had to vent! I'm worried about doing well.

I would stick it out.  Always ask questions about the assignment.  Does she want you to explain why the event was controversial?  Does she just want you to talk about the event?  Does she want it to be a first person narrative?  All of those stupid questions that will affect your grade in the end.  She will either get tired of your questions - but you will still know the answers to do better - or she will look more kindly upon you for putting so much effort into the class.

Also, I know a lot of teachers are much harder the first couple of weeks to weed out the people who dont want to do any work.

    Good luck!

That's excellent advice. For the first assignment, she said that nobody asked her questions so she assumed we understood it. It was just a sentence assignment, but she wanted really long sentences. Thank you so much for commenting!

I just realized that if I had to transfer to another English class, I'd have to buy another book from the bookstore.

This makes me not want to attend college, period.
I hope she's not so...such a bitch the whole term.

maybe she was being picky about your use of ''towards''.  i would stick it out.

@lesslikemath@xanga - She wanted me to add, "...for a career in environmental science." Still, very picky. I've decided to stick it out. I don't want to have to buy another book for a different English book.

@NOTdaGRLnextDR@xanga - I got no choice, though. My career choice requires grad school!

    I hate writing.
    Good Luck! =)
Talk to her about it and what she wants specifically.
